Ingredients:

• 250gm – yellow moong dal
• 5 tbsp – oil
• 1 – big Onion (finely chopped)
• 2 – medium-sized Tomatoes (finely chopped)
• 5 – Green chillies (finely chopped)
• 1.5-inch piece – Ginger (crushed)
• 6 to 8 – fresh Curry leaves
• 1/2 tsp – Turmeric powder
• a handful of Coriander leaves (finely chopped)
• 4 cups – water
• salt to taste

Method:

  1. Wash and soak the dal in 4 cups of water for 30 to 40 minutes.
  2. Heat oil in a heavy bottomed vessel.
  3. Add onions, green chillies, and ginger and saute on a low flame till the onions are a nice golden brown.
  4. Add the dal along with water, curry leaves, salt, and turmeric powder.
  5. Cook the dal on a low flame.
  6. After the dal is three-fourth done, add tomatoes. Continue cooking till the dal is done and is a little thick in consistency.
  7. Remove from gas and lightly churn the dal.
  8. Garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves.
  9. Serve hot with brown rice or roti and any fried sabzi.
