Ingredients:

• Brussels sprouts – 30 (small ones)
• Toor dal- 2 cups
• Sambhar powder – 4 tsp
• Chilli powder – 1 tsp
• Brown sugar – 1/2 tsp
• Tamarind paste – 2 tsp
• Water – 6 cups
• Curry leaves – 10
• Chopped coriander -4 tsp
• a pinch – Turmeric
• salt
• For seasoning: Oil – 6 tsp
• Mustard Seeds – 1/2 tsp
• Urad dal- 1/2 tsp
• Cumin – 1 tsp
• Dry chillies – 4

Method:

  1. Clean and cut the Brussels sprouts at the stem ends. Pressure cook toor dal and sprouts for 3 whistles, in 6 cups of water, salt and a little turmeric.
  2. Heat oil in a vessel and add all the other seasonings to it. When they splutter, add the boiled toor dal with Brussels sprouts.
  3. Add sambhar powder, chilli powder, brown sugar, dry chillies and curry leaves to it. Add water if required.
  4. Make sure sprouts are not mashed while stirring. When it boils add tamarind paste.
  5. Keep on medium heat for 5 minutes.
  6. Add chopped coriander and switch off the stove and put the lid on it.
  7. This recipe can be made using any kind of spouts, not necessarily brussels sprouts
