
Ingredients:
• 2 cups – broken Wheat (dalia)
• 1 cup – shelled peas
• 1 red bell pepper, cut into small pieces and deseeded
• 1/4 tsp – Turmeric powder
• 2 tbsp. – oil
• 4 tbsp. – gram flour (besan)
• salt to taste
• For the tempering:
• 2 tbsp. – oil
• 1 tsp – Mustard Seeds
• a small bunch of Curry leaves
• 1/2 tsp – Red Chilli powder, optional
Method:
- Heat oil in a pressure cooker. Fry peas and bell pepper for a minute over medium heat. Lower heat and mix in the broken wheat and turmeric powder. Add chilli powder if required. Cook for 2 mins. on low fire.
- Mix in 4 cups of water and salt to taste, and pressure cook the broken wheat till soft and till all the water is absorbed.
- Cool at room temperature. Mash the cooked broken wheat and add the gram flour. Blend with your fingers to form a smooth dough.
- Divide the dough into 4 portions.
- Take 4 pieces of cling wrap. Place a single portion of the dough on one of the cling wrap pieces (6 inches long), wrap the cling wrap around the mixture and tighten the two sides to shape like a sausage. Make four such sausages and place in a steamer.
- Steam these vegetable sausages (gattas) for 6-7 mins. Remove from the steamer and cool. Cut into half-inch pieces. Place on a serving plate.
- Heat oil for tempering. Add mustard seeds and allow to splutter. Then, add the curry leaves. Pour over the gattas and serve as a starter.
