Ingredients:

• Tamarind – 1 Lemon size
• Oil – 2 tbsp
• Mustard Seeds – 1 tsp
• Black gram dal – 2 tsp
• Garlic – 8 cloves, peeled and slightly crushed
• Onion – 1/2 cup, chopped
• Chilli powder – 1 tsp
• Sambar powder – 2 tsp
• Mushrooms – 200 gm, quartered
• Fresh or canned Bamboo shoots – 1 cup, cut into 4 cm pieces
• Salt to taste

Method:

  1. Soak tamarind in 2 cups of water and extract the juice.
  2. Heat the oil in a kadai. Add mustard.
  3. When it splutters, add the dal.
  4. When the dal begins to brown, add garlic and fry well till fragrant.
  5. Add onion and fry till they are golden brown.
  6. Add chilli and sambar powders and the tamarind extract.
  7. Simmer without covering for five minutes.
  8. Add mushrooms, bamboo shoots and salt.
  9. Simmer covered for five more minutes.
  10. Serve.
