Ingredients:

• Rice – one and a half cup, washed and drained
• Ghee or oil – 4 tbsp
• black gram Dal – 2 tsp
• Mustard Seeds – 1 tsp
• Fenugreek – 1/2 tsp
• pea nuts – 2 tbsp
• Curry leaves few
• Onion – 1/2 cup, chopped finely
• chilli powder – 1 tsp
• coriander powder – 1 tsp
• Tomato puree – 1/4 cup
• water – 4 cups
• Coriander leaves – 2 tbsp, chopped
• salt to taste

Method:

  1. Heat ghee or oil.
  2. Add mustard seeds.
  3. When they splutter, add black gram dal, fenugreek and peanuts.
  4. When they turn brown, add curry leaves and onion.
  5. When the onion is light brown, add chilli and coriander powders.
  6. Add tomato puree, water, salt and rice.
  7. When the contents begin to boil, cover the pan and lower the heat.
  8. Let the rice simmer gently till all the water is absorbed and rice is cooked.
  9. Serve hot, garnished with coriander leaves.
