Ingredients:

• 3/4 cup – Toor Dal
• 2- Onion (chopped lengthwise)
• 2- Tomatoes (chopped )
• 2- Green chillies
• 6- Garlic pods (mashed)
• 1 tsp – Lemon Juice
• 2 tsp – Coriander leaves chopped
• For Tempering:
• 1/4 tsp – Mustard Seeds
• 1/4 tsp – Urad Dal
• 3 – Red Chillies
• 1/4 tsp – Cumin seeds
• 1/4 tsp – Asafetida powder
• 2 tsp oil.

Method:

  1. Wash the toor dal thoroughly and pressure cook with turmeric powder until three whistles.
  2. Heat oil in a kadai and splutter the mustard seeds, urad dal, red chillies, cumin seeds and asafoetida powder.
  3. Now add the finely chopped onion and saute until pink.
  4. Then add the tomato pieces and saute until they soften.
  5. Next, add the green chillies and mashed garlic pods and fry them for a while.
  6. Add water as per taste since the sambar should be watery.
  7. Now add the toor dal with salt and boil it. Simmer until the vegetables get cooked.
  8. Remove from the stove and add the lemon juice and the coriander leaves to the sambar.
  9. Serve hot with rice.
