• Flat beans – 100g
• Chana dal – 150g
• Red Chillies – 5 to 6
• Salt to taste
• Oil – around 5 to 6 tbsp
• Mustard Seeds – 1/2 tsp
• Curry leaves – one small stalk


  1. Soak the chana dal and red chillies for about 2 hours.
  2. Cut the flat beans into small pieces.
  3. After 2 hours of soaking the chana dal and red chillies, grind it coarsely.
  4. Heat oil in a kadai, and add the mustard seeds and curry leaves.
  5. After the seeds stop spluttering, add flat beans into the oil.
  6. Add a little salt for the flat beans to cook.
  7. After the flat beans are cooked properly, add the ground chana dal paste into the oil.
  8. Cook well till the water from the chana dal dries away.
  9. Serve usli with rasam rice or mor kolumbu.
