Ingredients:

• 1 cup – Channa dal (Black gram dal)
• 5 cup – water
• 1 – small onion, finely chopped
• 1 – medium tomato, finely chopped
• 1 tbsp – each Ginger and garlic, finely chopped
• 2 – green chillies, finely chopped
• 2 tbsp – cilantro, finely chopped
• 1/2 tsp – Turmeric powder
• 1/2 tsp – Red Chilli powder
• 1/2 tsp – Garam Masala powder
• 1 tsp – Jeera
• 1 pinch – Hing
• salt – to taste
• 2 tbsp – Butter
• 2 tbsp – pure Ghee

Method:

  1. Wash the dal, cook in a pressure cooker with water, turmeric, salt and butter.
  2. After one whistle, let it cook on a slow heat for another five mins.
  3. In the meantime, take ghee in a pan, heat it and put jeera.
  4. When jeera starts to splutter, put garlic and onion.
  5. Saute it till onions are a little golden brown.
  6. Now mix tomatoes, ginger and let them cook for 1-2 mins.
  7. Then add hing, chopped chilli and chopped cilantro.
  8. Let it cook again for another minute, add red chilli and garam masala powders.
  9. Once the dal is done mix the masala thoroughly.
  10. Let the dal boil once with the masala.
  11. Serve hot with chapatti or rice.
