Ingredients:

• Bengal Gram dal – 1 cup
• Ghee – 2 tbsp
• Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
• Cardamom – 4
• Cinnamon – 5cm piece
• Bay Leaves – 2
• Red Chillies – 2, broken into halves
• Coconut – 1/2 cup, finely chopped pieces
• Chilli powder – 1 tsp
• Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
• Cumin powder – 1 tsp
• Sugar – 1 tsp
• Salt to taste

Method:

  1. Cook dal with 4 to 5 cups of water till soft.
  2. Heat ghee in a small pan and season with cumin seeds, cardamom, cinnamon, and bay leaves.
  3. Add red chillies and coconut pieces.
  4. Fry till coconut is light brown.
  5. Lower the flame, add all the powders, and add this mixture to the dal.
  6. Add salt, sugar, and water if needed.
  7. Simmer for 5 minutes and switch off the flame.
