Ingredients:

• 1 cup – Toovar (red gram ) Dal
• 250 g – brinjal, quartered
• 1 cup – green mango, chopped
• 1/2 cup – onion, finely chopped
• 1/4 cup – onion, sliced
• 10 to 12 – green chillies, sliced
• 2 tsp – coriander powder
• 3 tbsp – oil (preferably ground nut)
• 1 tsp – mustard
• 1 tsp – cumin
• 2 red chilli, broken into pieces
• 1 tbsp – garlic, finely chopped
• 2 tsp – Ghee, optional
• few Curry leaves
• salt to taste

Method:

  1. Cook Toovar Dal till very soft and mash well.
  2. Cook brinjals with sliced onion, green chillies and coriander powder with 1 cup of water.
  3. Add mango pieces, salt and cook till soft.
  4. Add the Dal and enough water to get thick pouring consistency. Simmer for 2-3 minutes.
  5. Heat the oil in a small Kadai or fry pan. Add mustard and cumin.
  6. When they splutter, add red chillies and curry leaves. Add garlic.
  7. When it turns golden brown, add onion.
  8. Fry till onion is brown and add the contents to the Dal. Mix well.
  9. Pour in the Ghee (optional) and serve hot with steamed rice.
