Ingredients:

• 1/2 cup – Arhar Dal.
• 1 – Onion, chopped lengthwise.
• 1 – Large potato- chopped into big cubes| For masala:
• 1 tsp – Jeera.
• 3/4 tsp – Dhaniya seeds.
• 1/2 tsp – Methi seeds.
• 5 to 6 – Black peppers.
• 1/2 tsp – Hing powder.
• 1/2 tsp – Haldi powder.
• 2 – medium tomatoes, chopped into cubes.
• 1/2 tsp – Tamarind paste.

Method:

  1. Heat very little oil in a pan and roast all the ingredients except tomatoes till they are golden brown. For roasting first add dhania seeds, black pepper. Then add jeera, hing and haldi.
  2. Grind the roasted masala with the tomatoes to a fine paste. Season with mustard seeds, curry leaves, hing, onion, ready made sambar powder (optional).
  3. Method:
  4. Heat oil. Add mustard. Once it splutters, add curry leaves and hing powder. Immediately add onions and fry till golden brown.
  5. Add the tomato masala paste and fry till a little oil appears.
  6. Then add the cooked dal, salt and 1/2 tsp – sugar. Add sambhar powder. Bring to a boil. Garnish with coriander leaves.
  7. Sambhar is ready.
