
Ingredients:
• 1/2 cup – Arhar Dal.
• 1 – Onion, chopped lengthwise.
• 1 – Large potato- chopped into big cubes| For masala:
• 1 tsp – Jeera.
• 3/4 tsp – Dhaniya seeds.
• 1/2 tsp – Methi seeds.
• 5 to 6 – Black peppers.
• 1/2 tsp – Hing powder.
• 1/2 tsp – Haldi powder.
• 2 – medium tomatoes, chopped into cubes.
• 1/2 tsp – Tamarind paste.
Method:
- Heat very little oil in a pan and roast all the ingredients except tomatoes till they are golden brown. For roasting first add dhania seeds, black pepper. Then add jeera, hing and haldi.
- Grind the roasted masala with the tomatoes to a fine paste. Season with mustard seeds, curry leaves, hing, onion, ready made sambar powder (optional).
- Method:
- Heat oil. Add mustard. Once it splutters, add curry leaves and hing powder. Immediately add onions and fry till golden brown.
- Add the tomato masala paste and fry till a little oil appears.
- Then add the cooked dal, salt and 1/2 tsp – sugar. Add sambhar powder. Bring to a boil. Garnish with coriander leaves.
- Sambhar is ready.
