Ingredients:

• Bengal Gram dal – 1 cup
• Ghee or oil – 5 tbsp
• Onion – 1 cup, finely sliced
• Ginger – 2 tsp, chopped
• Green chillies – 2 slit
• Tomato – 1/2 cup, chopped
• Cumin powder – 1/2 tsp
• Coriander powder – 1 tsp
• Sugar – 1 tsp
• Garam Masala – 1 tsp
• Bay Leaf – 1
• Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
• Red Chillies – 2, broken
• Salt to taste

Method:

  1. Wash the dal. Add about 2.5 cup of water and soak for 1 hour.
  2. Heat 3 tbsp of ghee or oil. Add onion and ginger and fry till onion is soft.
  3. Add to the dal. Add green chillies. Heat (with soaking water) till it begins to boil.
  4. Lower the heat and simmer gently till the dal is cooked and almost dry.
  5. Add more hot water if needed while cooking.
  6. Add tomato, cumin, coriander and garam masala powders. Add salt and sugar. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  7. Heat remaining ghee or oil. Add cumin.
  8. When it splutters, add bay leaf and dry chilli.
  9. Fry for few seconds and add to the dal. Serve hot.
