Ingredients:
• Bengal Gram dal – 1 cup
• Ghee or oil – 5 tbsp
• Onion – 1 cup, finely sliced
• Ginger – 2 tsp, chopped
• Green chillies – 2 slit
• Tomato – 1/2 cup, chopped
• Cumin powder – 1/2 tsp
• Coriander powder – 1 tsp
• Sugar – 1 tsp
• Garam Masala – 1 tsp
• Bay Leaf – 1
• Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
• Red Chillies – 2, broken
• Salt to taste
Method:
- Wash the dal. Add about 2.5 cup of water and soak for 1 hour.
- Heat 3 tbsp of ghee or oil. Add onion and ginger and fry till onion is soft.
- Add to the dal. Add green chillies. Heat (with soaking water) till it begins to boil.
- Lower the heat and simmer gently till the dal is cooked and almost dry.
- Add more hot water if needed while cooking.
- Add tomato, cumin, coriander and garam masala powders. Add salt and sugar. Simmer for 5 minutes.
- Heat remaining ghee or oil. Add cumin.
- When it splutters, add bay leaf and dry chilli.
- Fry for few seconds and add to the dal. Serve hot.
