Ingredients:

• 1/4 cup – Urad Dal (split and de-skinned)
• 3 – Tomatoes
• 1 – Onion (chopped)
• 1 tsp – Mustard Seeds + Cumin seeds
• 1/4 tsp – Asafoetida powder
• 15 – Mor milagai/Sun dried buttermilk chillies (broken as two pieces)
• A few Curry leaves
• 1 tsp – Lemon juice
• Salt

Method:

  1. Wash the urad dal and take in a pressure cooker along with chopped tomatoes.
  2. Add 2 cups of water and cook them for 3 whistles.
  3. Keep aside and let the steam release.
  4. Later, mash them slightly with a spoon and add enough salt to the dal.
  5. Now heat enough oil in a pan and crackle the mustard seeds, cumin seeds, broken chillies, curry leaves and asafoetida powder.
  6. Add the chopped onions to the tempered spices and saute until the onions turns translucent.
  7. Add this tempered spices and onions to the cooked tomato dal.
  8. Bring to boil and turn off the stove immediately.
  9. Finally add the lemon juice and give a stir.
  10. Serve with rice and papads.
