Ingredients:

• 1 cup – Toor Dal
• 1 tsp – sugar, optional
• 1 cup – chopped Onion
• 6 flakes – Garlic
• 2 cm – Ginger
• 3 – 4 – Green chillies
• 3 tbsp – Ghee or oil
• 1 tsp – Cumin seeds
• 1 pinch – Asafoetida
• 1 tsp – chilli powder
• Curry leaves few
• Coriander leaves to garnish
• salt

Method:

  1. Pressure cook dal with about 2 cups of water and 1/2 the onions till soft.
  2. Cool and open the cooker after 15 minutes.
  3. Add salt and sugar (optional) and mix well.
  4. Meanwhile finely chop garlic, ginger and green chillies.
  5. Heat oil or ghee in a kadai. Add cumin.
  6. When it splutters, add curry leaves and asafoetida.
  7. Add the remaining onion, garlic, ginger and green chillies.
  8. Fry till onions are light brown. Add chilli powder.
  9. Add the dal and simmer for 2 minutes.
  10. Serve garnished with coriander leaves.
  11. Goes well with rice or chapatti.
